Chinese numeral system counts from unit, ten, hundred, thousand and then to myriad. Then the above words repeat as unit myriad, ten myriad, hundred myriad and thousand myriad. A new word is introduced for myriad myriad which is known as "yi". The counting system moves forward as unit yi, ten yi, hundred yi, thousand yi and myriad yi.
European numeral system counts from unit, ten, hundred and then to thousand. Then the above words repeat as unit thousand, ten thousand and hundred thousand. A new word is introduced for thousand thousand which is known as "million" in English. The counting system moves forward as unit million, ten million, hundred million and thousand million. Another new word is introduced for million million which is known as "billion" in English.
Before the Arabic numbers were used widely in China, the writing of a large number such as 3850000 is (Here we need a little bit imagination, as I do not have a Chinese word processor here...)
Three Eight Five <---- (Imagine these are the Chinese business mumerics for 3, 8, and 5.)
M<---- (Imagine this is the Chinese word for 'Myriad', this row is used to indicate the size of the digit Five.)
European adopted Arabic numbers earlier than the Chinese and introduced a ',' or '.' every 3 digits to partition a large number according to the concept of introducing a new counting word every three digits of numbers. So 3850000 is written as 3,850,000. This is essentially readable as 3 million 850 thousand.
The adoption of Arabic numbers in China and other Far East countries was slightly later and ',' was also adopted without any changes from the European customs. This creates difficulties for children to count in most oriental languages if s/he sees 3,850,000. I certainly have to count from the last digit, i.e. unit, ten, hundred, thousand, myriad, ten myriad and then hundred myriad in order to identify the size of 3 when I was small. However if the number is partitioned as 385,0000 then I do not have any problem in reading it in Chinese because it is simply 385 Myriad.
Read the number in Chinese without counting to identify the size of 7 in the above number.
This is certainly difficult.
But partition the number as 765,4685,6300. You can immediately read it out in Chinese as 765 Yi 4685 Wan (Myriad) 6300.
