Introduction

The Universities Maritime Greenwich Campus is situated on the site of the old Royal Naval College site located in Greenwich, South East London on the Thames river.
The University of Greenwich has established a major campus within the newly established Maritime Greenwich World Heritage site, centred on three historic buildings planned by Sir Christopher Wren. The headquarters of the university are based here and up to 3,000 students will eventually study on this splendid baroque site. The Maritime Greenwich University Campus includes a new library, the largest in the university, with state-of-the-art computing and learning facilities. Based in a listed 18th Century building, £12 million has been invested to restore it to its Georgian splendour.

Greenwich has a fascinating history. Henry VIII, Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth I were all born here. The Queen's House was designed by Inigo Jones for James I's wife in 1618. The National Maritime Museum has been built around it, while the Old Royal Observatory sits on the top of the hill from where you can enjoy views of the whole of London. Greenwich has one of the best of London's Royal Parks. The Meridian Line dissects it so you can set your watch by the Greenwich Mean Time digital clock. Greenwich park rolls down the hill from Blackheath Village into Greenwich - both have excellent pubs and restaurants.

There are many different ways to get to the University. Hopefully the details below will be enough to guide you to us. If you have any problems either before or at the time of traveling please call me on 020 8331 8731 or email me and I or a colleague will do our best to help you.

From Central London (or arriving via EuroStar) to Greenwich

If you are traveling from accomodation in central London you have two basic choices for getting to Greenwich. If you are arriving in London via EuroStar you normally arrive at Waterloo Station. Proceed on foot the short distance to the adjoining Waterloo East Station and take the train as detailed in the table below.

Method
JourneyTime/Frequency
Travel Instructions
Train
20 mins/every 20-25 mins
From Charing Cross station or from Waterloo East Station catch a train to Greenwich or Maze Hill. Watch out! Many trains depart from Charing Cross and Waterloo East and not all of them stop at Greenwich/Maze Hill.
Jubilee Underground Line/DLR 15 mins (Tube) /every 10-15 mins
+5mins(change time)
+7 mins(DLR)/every 15 mins.
Take Jubilee Line East(towards Stratford).
Change at Canary Wharf and walk to Canary Wharf DLR (Dockland Light Railway) Station.
There are signs indicating the route.
Then take the DLR train south (towards Lewisham) to Cutty Sark or Greenwich Station.

Practically, the best method is by train.

From Greenwich Railway/DLR station to the entrance to University of Greenwich

When you come out of the station turn left. Walk along Greenwich High Road, As you walk you will see the Greenwich Cinema and the Café Rouge/Ibis Hotel on your right. Walk until you come to the Church on your left. Ahead of you will be pedestrian crossings. You need to get to the other side. Continue in this direction either through the market or along Nelson road and then left along King William Walk where you will find the entrance to the Royal Naval College on the other side of the road.

From Cutty Sark DLR station to entrance to University of Greenwich

When you come out at street level of the station turn left, then walk about 30 metres to the street. The gates at the entrance to the old Royal Naval College (which now hosts the University) will be about 100m ahead. Look for the gold top of the large domed buildings. The entrance is not marked University of Greenwich. Look for the signs for the Royal Naval College or ask a pleasant member of the English public for directions.

From University entrance (old Royal Naval College) to Queen Mary Court Building.

Walk through the main gates. Ahead of you will be four large buildings. Queen Mary Court is the last one on the right as you walk down the centre road. The entrance to Queen Mary Court is on the far side of the building nearest the main road.

Site Map of University of Greenwich Maritime Campus

Below is a map of the University Campus showing the surrounding roads of Greenwich. Greenwich Railway station is just off the map to the left. The dotted line running from the River Thames is the Meridian Line.

Notes:

Approximate timings & train frequencies are based on the Railtrack online railway timetable/journey planner
Other useful links:
If you get a taxi, it may be easier to ask for the Royal Naval College in Greenwich, rather than the University, as they are more likely to know where it is.
If you've got time to spare and want to see some good city views, you can get a river ferry from central London to Greenwich. Boats leave from Embankment (just outside Charing Cross/Embankment stations) and Westminster (Westminster tube station).

Hotels

The following is a list of local hotels. The Hamilton is a privately run hotel and apparently very good. The Ibis is very near the University and DLR and Rail stations. The Clarendon is a bit further out but supposedly reasonable. The others I am not sure of.

Restaurants

Greenwich is full of restaurants and pubs catering mainly for the tourists who visit Greenwich so you will have no problem finding something to eat and drink. Particularly recommended would be the Trafalgar pub which is a short walk along the river past the University.
